What does a psychiatric nurse practitioner do?

A psychiatric nurse practitioner is a medical provider that one may visit if they are having trouble with their mental health. The practitioner will assess, diagnose and treat the person who is having mental health problems.

They will continue to see the person regularly to manage the individual’s medication regimen and order provide supportive talk therapy.

There could be changes to medications as well as other recommendations if necessary. The practitioner may collaborate with other medical providers such as the primary care doctor and the person’s therapist, or the patient’s family for the best outcome of the patient. There may be different levels of treatment plans depending upon the acuity of the patient.

A large part of the care the practitioner provides is to assess for suicidal ideation ad safety risks and develop plans for a patient in crisis. Treatment plans will be adjusted accordingly to best fit the patient’s needs.
